After all I have done for you
Photographic documentation of Ngozi Schommers endurance-based Performance
After all I have done for you.
ABOUT
Ngozi Schommers' text-based endurance performance focuses on the violent potential of language. On a yellow-primed wall, the phrase "After all I have done for you" is written repeatedly before being erased with vegetable oil over the course of the performance until the words become illegible.
Boots worn by the performers, oversized overalls for men, a galvanized bucket, and other simple materials allude to a blue collar context. The sentences Schommers chooses for her ongoing series come from her own professional encounters. They are phrases into which passive aggressiveness, defensiveness, and reproach can be read. The treated wall in the exhibition space is emblematic of a wall of violence, racism, toxicity, and structural abuse of power in the work environment, which the artist encounters again and again and which, despite all efforts, seems impossible to tear down.
